The level-minus-one Menger Sponge was folded and "photographed"
by John Paulsen. As you can see, it takes no time at all to fold.
It doesn't even take any paper!
Jeannine Mosely has developed non-trivial
Menger Sponges.
Her web site includes instructions, and pictures of the
level-zero
and level-two sponges.
The larger the sponge, the more business cards it takes to make it,
as shown in the table below:
Number of cards in: | |||
Level | Structure | Panelling | Total |
-1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
0 | 6 | 6 | 12 |
1 | 120 | 72 | 192 |
2 | 2,400 | 1,056 | 3,456 |
3 | 48,000 | 18,048 | 66,048 |
4 | 960,000 | 336,384 | 1,296,384 |
n | 6*(20)^n | 6*(8)^n + 3 * Sum of: ( (8)^m * (20)^(n-m) ) from m=1 to m=n |
